Yuriorkis Gamboa vs Marcos RamirezHBO Boxing After Dark Fight Results
At Pechanga Resort in Temecula, CA, Yuriorkis Gamboa knocked out Marcos Ramirez at 1:41 of round two after being dropped himself in the first round.
Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Marcos RamirezDisplaying aggression that bordered on recklessness, Yuriorkis Gamboa 12-0 (10) dropped to a knee from an elbow landed by Marcos Ramirez 25-1 (16) during a wild exchange in round one, but rallied to drop Ramirez twice in the second. An uppercut to Ramirez's nose forced the first knockdown, prompting Gamboa to unleash a flurry that put Ramirez down for the second and final time. Referee Jerry Cantu finished the ten count at 1:41 of round two. Gamboa, a featherweight with heavyweight expectations, has hit the canvas in each of his last two fights. Although he has the speed and boxing skills to "Just win, baby," he chooses a more crowd pleasing, and riskier, style. Alfredo Angulo vs. Andrey TsurkanAlfredo Angulo pounded the tough but outclassed Andrey Tsurkan around the ring for most of ten rounds until Tsurkan's corner mercifully waved a white towel until referee, Tony Crebs waived off the fight. Tsurkan showed promise early in the fight with a couple jabs and a left hook that bobbled Angulo's head, but Angulo couldn't be slowed by mere punches tonight. Stalking Tsurkan from the opening bell, Angulo brawled when needed and boxed at times, but threw his punches with force and conviction throughout. Tsurkan's legs wobbled several times as Angulo ripped bodyshots, hooks and uppercuts into him. Angulo remains undefeated at 14-0 with 11 KOs. Tsurkan's record falls to 26-4 (17). Sergio Martinez vs. Alex BunemaSergio Martinez dominated Alex Bunema for eight rounds, forcing referee Raul Caiz Jr. to stop the bout before the start of round nine. The southpaw Martinez knocked Bunema down with a straight left in round two, but that was the least of the game Congan native's problems as the beating escalated into a one-sided assault. Unable to stop the flow of punches from Martinez. "We didn't know he was that fast," said promoter, Gary Shaw, of Martinez after the fight. "The 154 pound division, with Vernon Forrest at the top, has Martinez right behind him and Angulo not far behind." Indeed the division is quickly gaining steam with Martinez and Angulo rising, Paul Williams making his mark in the division with his KO of Andy Kolle, and the possibility of Antonio Margarito making the seven pound bump after taking care of some 147 pound business. Margarito was in the crowd tonight, as he was last Saturday to see Shane Mosley knock out Ricardo Mayorga. The HBO televised card was billed as "Night of the Rising Stars" the second such offering from Gary Shaw. Shaw announced that a third installment of the series can be expected in early 2009.
