Vitali Klitschko Defeats Chris Arreola

Ukranian Too Strong For Valiant Challenger

Vitali Klitschko retained his WBC Heavyweight Title on Saturday after beating Cristobal Arreola at the Staples Center.

Before this fight, Chris Arreola was undefeated with 24 of his 27 wins coming by way of knockout. He had never been past the eighth round before, and many believed his only hope of victory in this fight was to knock Klitschko out. They were proved right, as Arreola just didn't have the build or skill to win rounds against the Ukranian.

How Klitschko vs. Arreola Went

Klitschko dominated round one. He was using combinations to great effect, while Arreola was just standing in front of him absorbing them without throwing back.

The second round was just as easy for Vitali, and the lack of head movement on the part of Arreola was really noticeable. Arreola just couldn't get out of the way of Klitschko's punches.

The fans of Arreola must have been getting irritated in round three, as while he was throwing a little more, he was just standing in range of the Ukranian, allowing Klitschko to tee off.

Arreola finally got going in round four, and outworked Klitschko to steal the round. He found a route inside and used it to work the body in particular.

He undid all his hard work in round five though, as he walked on to absolutely everything Klitschko could offer, and wasn't throwing much back in return.

Rounds six and seven just exhibited more of the same. Arreola just couldn't get past the jab or movement of the huge Ukranian, and he was being made to pay for lounging around in range.

Vitali's workrate dropped in the eighth, and Arreola had his best round of the fight. He connected with quite a few head shots and forced Klitschko onto the back foot.

In the ninth and tenth sessions though, it was all Klitschko. Arreola was taking some heavy shots, and looking very marked up. His corner decided to stop the fight after the tenth round, when it was apparent that Arreola may have got stopped had the fight carried on.

It was a dominating performance from Klitschko, who didn't even seem to be in fantastic shape. Rumours are swirling he has already signed to fight Kevin Johnson in December.

Undercard At The Staples Center

Johnathon Banks narrowly outpointed Javier Mora in a closely contested fight. Banks took the role of counter puncher, and managed to hurt Mora a couple of times in the latter stages of the fight. He earned a majority decision.

Cedric Boswell's fight against Cisse Salif was as dull as boxing gets. Salif seemed to have no inclination to throw anything, which made for a one sided affair in favour of Boswell.

Hot prospect John Molina looked very impressive stopping the very sturdy Efren Hinojosa in one round. Hinojosa couldn't beat the count after a vicious body shot that most in the lightweight division would struggle to get up from.

Salvador Sanchez II stopped Trinidad Mendoza in round three after a body shot put Mendoza down for the second time. Sanchez mixed it up well, and had particularly potent uppercuts.

Klitschko: The Better Man On The Night

At the end of the day, Chris Arreola's style didn't match up well to that of Vitali Klitschko, and the better man won. However, Arreola shouldn't be disheartened, as he is young enough to come again.
