Las Vegas - Manny Pacquiao wins by TKO when Oscar de la Hoya cannot answer the bell for round nine. The Pacman dominates De La Hoya at welterweight.
The question going into the fight was whether Pacquiao, 29, could avoid De La Hoya's powerful left hook and still be effective for an entire twelve rounds. The world will never know because De La Hoya, 35, couldn't avoid Pacquiao's straight left from the opening bell to the final bell, in round eight.
With his left eye turning purple and swollen almost shut, De La Hoya sat in his corner and faced the reality that there was little he could do but take more punishment. When referee Tony Weeks waived off the fight, on the advice of Oscar's corner, De La Hoya lept to his feet, faster than he had moved all night, and immediately met Pacquiao in the middle of the ring to congratulate his conqueror.
From the first bell Pacquiao fought with discipline and skill. Hands high to avoid Oscar's hook, Manny darted in, unreeled combinations, then darted back out, never giving Oscar the chance to fire back.
Sometimes Pacquiao fired a single straight left and landed it. Sometimes he fired two straight lefts in quick succession, and landed them. Sometimes he landed to Oscar's body and folded him up. All night, Manny dominated.
During the post fight presser, Bob Arum of Top Rank had a quip for the press.
"The press is never wrong. They said it would be a mismatch. It was a mismatch." Of course, the mismatch was in Pacquiao's favor. Arum made sure that proper honor was given where due. "If this is Oscar's last fight, it's important that we remember what he did for boxing and all the great things he did for the sport."
Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's trainer, made sure Manny kept up his controlled aggression.
"After the seventh round I told Manny that Oscar was going to try to knock him out since that was his only chance. But, I told him, don't carry him, it's your job to knock him out. And that's what he did."
We gave him great sparring partners with good left hands so he could take away the left and that's what Manny did, he took away Oscar's left."
According to Pacquiao, even though he controlled the fight, he never got cocky.
"I was never too confident because I never knew if he was going to throw a hard shot. I don't know what round it was, but he grabbed me and hit me with a left hook and an uppercut. I felt those punches."
De La Hoya was unable to attend the post-fight presser as he had gone to the hospital for observation.
Attendance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena was 15,001. Mostly Filipino, and completely fired up.

pacquiao is just lucky that hes young, the younger oscar would of showed
him what's up. he is just lucky. he should go against mayweather if he

The Hitman should be the Pacman's next fight no question about it.
Mayweather should fight Margarito if he is really for real. I agreed though
Manny versus Golden Boy in their prime it'll be Oscar no question about it.
Age kills.

Oscar is only 35 he is not htat old! he should still be at his prime. the
heck, look at calzhage or Hopkins, even jordan can dunk at 40!. The reality
is he was beaten fair and square by pacman.(beating of his life I might
add). Supporters of Hoya should accept this as hoya humbly accepted his
defeat. great champions know how to be gracious at defeat such as tito
trinidad. I admire hoya for being a true champion and being a gentleman.

It will be the greatest fight for the history of boxing. The dream match.
But one thing about golden boy is that he might end up his own career into
a bad dream match. Because he is going down just to loose weight. Thats a
big factor that we need to focus on. Im pretty sure that de la hoya can
stand in the ring but without his power. Physically i go for golden boy but
in inner strength and power it must pacman will be on top. He's just trying
to catch a falling star.

I love Oscar I think at 35 you still have the ability to defeat 29 year old
star like manny! But not standing 5 feet 10 inches and weighing only
147pounds not a good move for a 35 year old fighter and for Manny he is
simply one of the best right now no one out there could easily defeat him
Hatton will taste his second defeat against Manny!! Hatton didn't look to
impressive in his last fight!!! sorry my Hatton Lovers!!!

I thought if Oscar hadn't hit the downhill slide he would be too much for
Manny - maybe destroy him. As it was, Oscar was a shell of his old self,
and when you look at the shots thrown and landed three years ago against
Pretty Boy Floyd, where Oscar lost a close decision while landing 102 shots
to 207: 82 power punches to 138, we should have seen this coming. Floyd
Mayweather gave Oscar a hiding even though Oscar always looked
competitive. This was just a beating.

I just wanted to say Oscar we appreciate you for all you did for Boxing
although I feel you were a very good fighter way above average but not
great!!! Because you have yet to defeat an elite fighter your whole
career!!! Hall of Fame worthy yes one of the greatest of all times No!!!

To SA Harahap, La Hoya still has evrything to beat average guys, but Pac
Man is truly an exceptional fighter and has a style superior to La Hoya.
Remember what Freddy Roach said before fight: La Hoya can not handle
smaller and faster left-hander Ivan Calderon, then a 105-pound world
champion. from djoko
