Juan Diaz wins a unanimous decision over Paulie Malignaggi in closely contested fight. Robert Guerrero and Daniel Jacobs win undercard bouts.

Juan Diaz, fighting in his home town of Houston, Texas, made the most of his advantages, in and out of the ring, with a unanimous decision victory over Paulie Malignaggi. Greeted with scores of 118-110, 116-112, and 115-113, all for Diaz, Malignaggi related his disgust with the scoring to the heavily Diaz partisan crowd.

"Win or lose against (Floyd Mayweather), I want a rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez," said the jubilant Diaz after the fight.

Malignaggi, to no one's surprise, had a different take.

"The only reason I do this (box) anymore is for the paydays," said Malignaggi. "He gets to call out the winner of Mayweather/Marquez while I have to settle for being an opponent in someone else's home town."

Among Malignaggi's complaints were the choice of judges, two of whom were from Texas, with one from Oklahoma. The referee was also a Texas native.

Malignaggi started the fight strong with a quick jab and good footwork, rarely letting the slower-footed Diaz plant and fire his trademark combinations. In the second round, Diaz had an easier time finding Malignaggi and managed to crack him with hooks and straight rights.

The action continued to vacillate throughout the contest, though Malignaggi clearly controlled the pace with his movement and faster hands. Ring generalship, a largely ignored scoring criteria, favored Malignaggi.

Diaz never allowed Malignaggi's movement to frustrate him. He chugged forward from the opening bell to the last bell, alternately bouncing Malignaggi's head around then raising welts on his left side with whipping rights to the body.

A cut over Diaz's left eye, first opened by a punch, then, according to referee Lawrence Cole, widened by an accidental clash of heads, failed to become enough of an advantage for Malignaggi to turn the fight decisively in his favor.

Robert Guerrero Wins a Unanimous Decision Over Malcolm Klassen

Former two time featherweight champion, Robert Guerrero (25-1-1, 17) fought through a cut over his left eye and the hard punching of Malcolm Klassen (24-5-1, 17) to pick up a unanimous decision and the IBF super featherweight title. The southpaw Guerrero spent most of the night on the outside, jabbing, launching straight lefts, tagging Klassen with stiff uppercuts, then stepping to the side to avoid punishment. Scores: 117-111, 116-113, and 116-112 all for Guerrero.

Daniel Jacobs Wins Unanimous Decision Over Ishe Smith

Danniel Jacobs (18-0, 15 KOs) won a unanimous decision over Ishe Smith (21-4, 9 KOs) by being busier than the veteran fighter. Smith, 31, landed the harder punches throughout the fight, even buzzing the up and coming Jacobs, 22, in round five with a hard right hand, but couldn't muster enough sustained offense to persuade the judges. Scores: 96-93 twice and 100-89 all for Jacobs.

Whoever wrote the article detailing Malignaggi and Diaz is a complete idiot and misrepresented the fight.
Malignaggi was the clear winner in the fight. Using his jab and footwork to effectively control the fight. Diaz was FRUSTRATED, to say he wasn't is a complete fabrication. The only time Diaz was able to land anything substantial is when Malignaggi would fight on the inside and refuse to circle out and use his footwork. It was Malignaggi's choice to fight inside during certain rounds not because of Diaz's ability to cut off the ring and push forward.
The cut obviously affected Diaz's ability to fight. Malignaggi through 300 more punches than Diaz. Malignaggi controlled the fight from start to finish and dictated where it was fought. He was Robbed of a decision like he predicted before the fight.
Don't tell people Malignaggi didn't do enough to secure the decision, because anything short of a Knockout would have resulted in a Diaz decision.
it is an injustice and in any other sport it would be investigated. I really do hope that Golden boy and the Texas Commissions get as much bad press as possible.
Tonight I have read all over the internet that Fans are disgusted with boxing and now question whether they will even continue to watch. Something needs to be done about the corruption, and your lack of ability to properly represent the fight in your writing is proof that boxing is full of idiots..

I definitely agree with the comments made. I use to be a huge boxing fan, until the "businees" aspect and money hungry atmosphere dictated the outcome of fights. I also can't believe how someone could write this article. Malignaggi was in complete control of this fight. I am from Houston, and I can't understand how boxing has continued to turn for the worst. The true athletes train hard and put there all into this. For something like this decision for Diaz to happen, it sends a real message that it isn't about your skill and ability in the ring, it is about how well you can entertain and keep money in the promoter's pockets. I rather watch wrestling. Atleast then you know what you are getting when it comes to scripted decisions. I definitely think some palms got "greased" on this deal. There should be an investigation.

Ive watched this fight twice and clearly diaz won the fight... NOT what a joke the way golden boy was grinning and counting his bs money in his head after the fight is embarrassing to boxing. The judges in for this fight should be banned. It sure is hard to stay a fan and I have great respect for all who put their lives on the line while in the ring. Props to Paulie, did every thing to win and the only thing it cost him was his livlihood. He deserves all the money the judges got greased with instead of getting greased himself.

118-110 ???? are you efn kidding me. I totally agree with the previously posted comment. This is why "the sport of kings" is losing its crown to MMA. What a joke, but what can you expect from a clown like "crystal chin" De La Hoya's promotion. Seeing this b.s. makes me long for the days of great champions like Julio Cesar Chavez. I truly believe the last few idiots who think Diaz really won this fight will come to the realization of their own stupidity, when they see Diaz down on the canvas (K.O.-ed) with a Marquez/Mayweather standing over him.

I heard about this fight, I just saw the is on TSN Canada. These type of behaviors should not be happening. They force Don King out, now please, after watch that fight, Paulie Malignaggi was robed, this should not happen in AMERICA. What he said in the interview is the truth and one commentator stated that he didn't help himself with his statement.
Now boxing might punish him for his statements. what's happening to the Free world.
We the people should not stand for evil and money but for good and money. Be careful which you chose.
THE UNIVERSE WATCHES ALL THINGS AND ADJUST ACCORDINGLY.
