Roy Jones Jr. Faces Off Against Jeff Lacy in Mississippi

Aug 13, 2009 Dean Parr

The NABO Light Heavyweight crown will be on the line on August 15th as Roy Jones Jr. fights Jeff Lacy in the Gulf Coast Arena.

Roy Jones Jr. and Jeff 'Left Hook' Lacy are two fighters past their respective primes. Lacy never looked the same after he was schooled by Welshman Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones is just not the fighter he was. However, they will fight for a version of the World Light Heavyweight Title this Saturday night.

A Must Win For Both Fighters

Neither man can afford to lose this bout. If Jones loses, then he will have to admit that he jujst doesn't have it at a high level anymore, and if Lacy loses, it will prove that he just isn't a top level fighter. It would be a near impossibility for the loser of this fight to go on and do something significant in the sport in future times.

Jeff Lacy - A Wasted Talent

Four years ago, Jeff Lacy was considered to be one of the brightest prospects in boxing. He was knocking decent fighters out and looking exceptional doing it. This however, ended up working against him.

On the 4th of March 2006, Jeff Lacy was flown over to Manchester, England to fight the 40-0 Joe Calzaghe. Despite the fact Calzaghe had much more experience and had been in many world title bouts than his foe, most for some reason believed that Lacy would destroy Calzaghe in a couple of rounds. However, disaster struck for the hot prospect.

What ensued was one of the most one sided, vicious twelve round victories in quite some time, and Lacy has never mentally recovered from that. he has struggled to majority decision points wins over average fighters such as Epifanio Mendoza, and in his only meaningful match since the Joe Calzaghe fight, he lost a wide unanimous decision to Jermain Taylor.

Jeff Lacy will need to pull out a truly outstanding performance to defeat Roy Jones Jr. - or will he?

Is Roy Jones Really Still Fighting?

Roy Jones Jr. peaked in the early 2000s, and since he was obliterated in two rounds by Felix Trinidad in 2004, he has been on a downward slide. Since (and including) that fight, Jones has amassed a record of 4-4, and his wins haven't come in high quality competition.

Perhaps his most impressive victory was his win over Omar Sheika earlier this year, where he stopped his opponent in 5. However, Omar made Jones look very good as he didn't turn up in great shape, and he made Jones look excellent. People should not be duped by this performance though - Sheika is nowhere near top quality anymore.

A win over Jeff Lacy would be a step in the right direction if he truly does want to revitalise his career, but it is hard to see a 40 year old winning any of the big fights that may come as a result of a win over Lacy. It's a shame Roy Jones didn't retire after his last fight, as now, he could tarnish his legacy even more, and there is seemingly not a massive gain.

Who Will Win Lacy vs. Jones?

It's very hard to say, as it depends on which versions of the fighters turn up. Based on recent fights, Jones should be able to steal it as Lacy seems to have lost that winning mentality needed at this level. However, this is boxing and anything can happen, so don't count out 'Left Hook' Lacy.
